Default Bitting the bullet

Few days ago, a good friend called me about a Canon 5D MKII sale at BH for $1995 which was the same deal posted here in the Hot Deal forum. Then I looked Adorama's ad which had the 5D with the 24-105 f.4 L lens for $2799, I jumped in and ordered one. It came in 2days via 2nd day UPS air. I figure that since none of my kit lens on the XSi will work on a full frame camera except the 50mm f.1.8, this package is the only way to go.

So far it is working pretty good and find no problem with firmware ver. 2.1.1. However, the only question is the frame counter on the screen, it can only count up to 999 maximum and no higher than that with smaller format jpeg. Is this normal? I don't have that problem on the XSi or my Sony A200. Can anyone comment on that? Thanks!

Yes that is normal with all canons when using large capacity cards. When I use a 16gb on my T1i or 60i, I get only 999, but it will not count down till it really reach only 999 photos left.

Thanks for the reply. This is kind of annoying, It is what it is, I guess I am not the only one who has this problem.

Actually it is really not a big issue, you have over 2000 photos with a high volume card. And when it starts counting down to 999, 998 and so forth, you still have a ton of photos to go before the card is full.

It must be a generational thing. My T2i will show several thousand pics available on screen.

The t2i/550d takes high capacity cards so it probably knows about high numbers

My 7D shows 999 on the LCD with an 8GB CF card. Don't have to worry until it gets close to 001...

G'day WCKS

Don't worry about image count 'numbers' ... ALL camera makers have models on the market that show only 3 digits: it's only the latest camera bodies that go to 4 digits

Regards, Phil

Thanks all for the inputs! The exposure counter is a minor issue and I like the camera a lot. I had a chance to use my nephew's 7D when I was in Hong Kong a couple weeks ago. I like the handling of the 7D better than the 5D with better focusing system and faster FPS. If it wasn't for this fantastic price on the 5D, I would have gotten a 7D. Looks like Canon is really closing out this camera before the new replacement (Mk III?) coming out. Anyway, this is a fruitful Christmas for me, I am finally able to get an affordable full frame DSLR.
