Default Wide Lenses question(s)

OK with my 300D, I would like to get something wider than my Canon 20-35mm zoom. I have a friend who is going to let me test his Canon 17-40L & I will also shoot some color print film to look at the sharpness of it. I would possibly like to trade my Mint 6 month old 20-35 for the 17-40 - or:
Other lenses I am considering- ( unless Canon brings out a wide zoom at PMA that isn't a $1,000.00 plus 'L' lens!)
Tamron 17-35mm 2.8 Di
Sigma 15-30mm
Tokina 17mm
Has anyone out there used or have experience with the Tokina 17mm or the New Tamron 17-35 2.8 Di?
Thanks

There's also the new ∑ 12-24 F/4.5-5.6 EX with HSM. The ∑ 15-30mm also EX is an excellent lens but doen't come in HSM, which is the ultrasonic version of Canon's USM that makes the lens extremely quiet (ie silent) and fast with full-time manual focusing overide (ie no need to switch the button)...

Default Sigma 15-30 EX

I have the 15-30 ex and am veary happy with it, good build quality good sharp pics.

I also have the 70-200 ex with HSM

I use the 15-30 for mostly group photo's and landscapes. In this enviroment I don't need the HSM

I use the 70-200 for Sports indore and outdore and the HSM is great.

The 12-24 is new and don't now how good it is.

generly the Sigma EXs are good for the money but I here stay away from the 17-35 EX

last You can not remove the hood on the 15-30 so front filters are out.

I have the 17-40L and generally like it. My biggest complaint is that the focal length ring is rather close to the camera body, so I find that the built-in flash on the 10D almost/some times gets in the way. I'd rather the ring was a little bigger/wider and a little further away from the camer body.

Other than that, its a wonderful lens. I don't use it much, but I'm always impressed with it.

Can't comment on the others.

Here is a link to a few images taken with the 17-40. I love the lens.
