Thisi s my choice of lenses. A Sigma 70-300 APO zoom. Over the years I have had good luck with the Sigma line of lenses.

The 50-500 is a surprisingly good lens for such a long zoom range. I've seen some really good pictures with it. Good and sharp, nice color representation.

One big downsize is that its big and heavy. So you'll have to use it on a tripod. This isn't really a bad thing, because most photography is better on a tripod. But be prepaired to buy a tripod and head that can take the weight of that lens.

You haven't said what you will use the lens for. Please give us an idea. It isn't very good for indoor work because of the large aperture. Also, its AF isn't great (but it doesn't suck) again because of the large aperture.

The Tamron 28-300 does have the advantage of being a compact travel lens. It is light weight and less than 4 inches long when fully retracted. I use it a lot hiking and for street shooting.

Guys

This is a long 500mm tele lens! If you need this range show me something lighter beside a mirror-lens. Most other lenses with at least the same focal lenght are heavier, and cost much more! IMO the 50mm position is not really there for shooting, but is more a convenience feature to survey the surroundings before going for the kill...

There is a guy in the wildlife section that has posted several pictures from this lens. Look for it in the subject line, I think there are two posts with multiple pics each.

It's also fairly popular at www.dpreview.com, and I bet pbase.com will have some if you do some searching.
