Default Good consumer grade telephoto lens?

I'm looking for a good zoom/telephoto lens for the T5i I'm getting ready to buy. Something around a 250mm-300mm that will work well with outdoor sports type shots.

What would you suggest?

The Canon 55-250 is a very good lens for the price.

What really matters is what you want to shoot. For indoor sports (basketball, volleyball, etc.) you need a large aperture (f/2.8 or better), and for most outdoor sports (baseball, football, soccer, etc.) you might need something longer.

Thanks for the info. I've seen that they have some bundles that come with the 70-300 lens....how does that compare to the 55-250?

The 70-300 IS USM, the 70-300 L IS USM, and the 70-300 DO IS USM are all fine lenses, but they're not typically the lenses that get bundled with anything.

The 75-300 is NOT a good choice, and is the one most commonly included in bundles.

Bundles are usually built around a top-notch camera but include an assortment of useless and/or third-rate accessories. I would never recommend a bundle for anything.

The 55-250 is a good lens at it price point and scores well with the IQ stakes

I have the 70-300 USM and if you know how to use it, it can produce some real quality shots I'm getting ready to sell mine for a longer reach but I was very happy with it.
