I wanted to try out shooting a longer exposure and having the flash pop at the end. One style I wanted to achieve is a stage where the band movement is blurred then frozen at one point. This way the lighting is captured without depending on a harsh flash.

How do I set the 10D up for this?

Thanks.

Go to Menu > Custom Function > #15, and set it to "1" instead of "0":
0 - 1st curtain
1 - 2nd curtain

... the flash will now fire last right before the shutter closes

Go into your 10D's custom functions.Custom function 15is used to set either first curtain sync or second curtain sync. Default is first curtain sync. All you do to activate second curtain sync is to change that function to second curtain sync.

I know how to change that setting. For example, if I wanted to take a room shot of a stage to capture the funky lighting, I'd put it on AV at f22 and let her rip. If I were to do the same thing but turn the flash on, would it give me the ambient glow AND a strobe?

Now I gotta get out the 10D and try it.

Av will do it, and so is manual depending on much you want the ambient light to contribute...

BTW you'll also need to set the flash (550EX) on 2nd curtain sync (press the '+' and '-' together twice)!

Ahh, now that could be a snag. I was talking about the built-in flash. I'm guessing this won't work then. I do however, have the 420EX flash. Will this work?

The built-in flash work just fine on 2nd curtain sync!
(... but is it powerful enough?)

I don't have a 420EX, but it should work as well: http://www.cps.canon-europe.com/arti...D/settings.jsp
"Use this Custom Function to achieve second-curtain sync with EX Speedlites that don't have a switch for second-curtain sync, such as the 420EX, 380EX or 220EX"
