I recently purchaseda newDigital Rebel Kit (for $550 might I ad) and a Sandisk UltraII 1GB card and was wondering how many shots I should be receiving in the highest resolution (non-RAW).

The reason I ask is when I first put the cardinit said I was getting 285 shots in the Auto mode and 314 shots in the rest and now it's saying that I'll get 285 ineverything except for Portrait where I'll get 314.

I talked to a friend (before I received thememory card)with the10D and he said that I should get about 280 shots, so I'm just wondering what others are getting, beacuse I have heard of the Ultra II's doing this on occasion.

I do format the cardeverytime I erase it as well.

Thanks!

The counter should say 407 with 1G Ultra II... but you can shoot quite a few more over (close to ~480) after that since this is just the camera estimate (while each actual jpeg files could be smaller)

How old is your card?
It should say 976MB after you format it and this capacity can decrease as the card get older or bad blocks are detected!

And if you do go to RAW, you will get about 160 on a 1gb card.

The other thing I have noted is that the size of the file changes with the ISO - the higher the ISO, the larger the file. Different modes have a different default ISO. You can check this out by setting the camera to P and then dialing up your ISO - you should see the number of pictures go down. I don't know if this is the way it's supposed to work, but it's how mine has worked with several different CF cards.

Thanks JohnG, you answered my question that I had posted in the memory card forums. I didn't know that if you increased the ISO, the file sizes increased too. Thanks!!!

As soon as I turned down the ISO, my number of shots went back up. Thanks for the info, I never would have thought of that.:-)

But does this happen when shootining RAW as well??

I'm having a similar experience with a 512 Ultra II, where the estimate keeps going down and down and down, but I shoot only in RAW, never JPEG. Do the file sizes change in RAW as well, when you change the ISO setting?

I got the Digital Rebel kit from Sears. Yes, it was brand new...no catch. Hint; they price match and give you 10% of the difference and have some of the best coupons around. My CF card was $94.99 shipped to my door from Newegg.
