Yeap

I've been wondering why my old Metz 45CT-5 in Auto works better than my 550EX, now we have proof! :-)
This E-TTL business of evaluating the flash based on the camera focusing points is finally getting its toll

NHL,

I havea METZ 54MZ flash unitthat works very well with my 10D in both TTL and Auto modes. It even senses when the camera has be placed in Hi sync mode when using it in the TTL mode. Unfortunately, the TTL mode doesn't work when using the flash with the 20D. I didn't like the results in the auto mode with the 20D as much as I did with the 10D. The dual flash head really helps when shooting portraits indoors while bouncing the flash. It ensures that you get decent catch lights in the subjects eyes. I managed to get the METZ for about the same price asa 550EXata METZ sponsored flash training seminar. Most of the Canon shooters there were very unhappy withCanon's on camera flash units, including the 550EX. The Nikon shooters all seemed pretty satisfied and there were few of them who actually brought the discounted METZ units for their cameras compared to the Canon folk.

There's a reason as to why the Metz works better than the 420/550EX (or Sigma EF500DG Super) on the EOS cameras, beside the dual-head which is an advantage already. The Metz system does not just use the camera internal evaluative metering, but they also factoring in an external sensor reading on the flash head itself!

The 54MZ is totally modular so expect Metz to come out with another SCA310x-Mx adapter anytime to support this new 20D... They always do, they are just the best in this game IMO :-)

Metz told me that the M3 adapter will support E-TTL II as needed for the 20D/1D II/1Ds II, which is due this fall.

I really like my Metz 54. It's a quality product, andcan replace a shelf full of less capable "dedicated" flashes for various systems, and adapt to new cameras in the future.

I'm a little surprised that they didn't test the EF500DG since they tested the 550EX. But maybe they aren't really equivalent beyond on paper?

Pity they didn't test with a ETTL-2 body. I know some people who like the results with it, but as this article seems to show, that can be situational....

God knows I'd quickly dump my 550EX for a Metz 70mz5 - except for the $400 price difference. Now the MZ54, that's a different and more real-world story. Oh well, too late now. Interesting comparison article.

$400 is not so much an issue as compared to the heft... This dual-head monster also weights more than twice the 10D ! :-):-):-)
