I currently have an Olympus C-740 Ultra Zoom and have been researching the Canon Rebel, 10d and 20d cameras for the quick power up, fast shutter speed, and fast auto-focus. I have decided on the 20d. I really know nothing about lenses and need to ask a couple of (probably stupid) questions. Are all of the ef lenses considered automatic? If I primarily take candid shots of grandchildren, and amalso interested in doing some portraits. I also take outdoor sports shots of the kids and also some gardening shots. Would someone please recommend a first lens to purchase?? I know I probably need to build an assortment of lenses, and would rather spend a little more for a better, more versatile lens, that go the cheap route and not be happy with the lens. There is a trip planned to disney world over Thanksgiving so I really need something for that trip. Hopefully I can learn the camera by then?? Do you think?? I need to keep the $$ to around $1500 - $1700 for both. I have found a camera body for $1200. All advise would be greatly appreciated. Janie

Where can you find a 20D for $1200? :-)

... that'll determine what's left for the lens!

I suspect you don't get the battery included at that price.

well, there's the sigma 70-300mm APO lens...200 bucks....and i've heard great things of it...that would give you 480mm with the sensor crop......that would be good for sports...

then you could find another lens, from wideangle to 70 and you'd have a nice range...(sorry don't know any in particular...)
