Hello,

I'm new to flash photography. I recently decided to get the 420ex speedlight to use with my drebel. Here's my question:

When using manual, Tv, or Av mode, does the camera take the flash into account when showing you what exposure settings to use? I'm asking this because the camera called for a longer shutter speed than I would think whenusing the flash to take some test pictures.

Thanks

In manual the camera will stay in whatever shutter speed you have selected althought the flash will still be in automatic E-TTL... In Av it will try to do a flash-fill and use some slower shutter speed as well to maintain the current exposure

The metering mode is also different in manual. The camera uses center-weighted metering in manual, and evaluative in Av and Tv. In the evaluative mode the metering will move with the focus point selected by the camera so pay attention to which one is highlighted: dark spot -> overexposure vs light area -> underexposure :?

Thanks for the information. I think it will help. I'm reading the link to the other post as well.
