:?I must be crazy but I cannot figure out how to do the mode I want (example: portrait mode) in low light without the flash going off. The only way I can figure it out is to do the flash off mode, but then I can no longer choose my shutter speed aperture ISO etc...

Am I just being dumb?

:?Thanks,

Amy

The only way to control both the shutter speed and aperture is to set the camera on manual!

... Don't worry the flash will still be on automatic E-TTL
(both with the built-in and with the external flash)

BTW the ISO is in Auto mode in Portrait that's why you can't overide it

If you set the 10D in Av mode [aperture priotity] or Tv mode [shutter priority] you can set whatever ISO you want to use, and the flash will only go off if you press the button on the 10D body to open the flash. If you use the "non-creative" modes, like portrait, the camera will always set some variables for you that you might want to set for yourself. Always use the so called "creative" modes, then you will have full control.

Hope this helps.
