I have a Canon 20D.

I installed your beta s/w, connected my camera and turned it on. Nothing comes up in the 'camera type' and a 'camera scan' does nothing.

The camera works fine with the Canon remote s/w, so I know the connections work OK.

My system is XP Home on a 3.0ghz system with 1gb of ram. What else do you need to know to debug this ?

Alan, I think I figured out why you and most likely no one else will see their DSLR camera listed. While I feel the problem should now be resolved, I've also added a new companion window to display debug information. Should you still have problems, you can send me (via PM or email) the log and it will help me trace the problem, if any exist. The download link originally posted has been updated.

Thanks so far for your efforts.

OK. Steps so far.

Downloaded the new version. Had to uninstall the old one before new one would go in (bug - please fix).

It now sees my camera as a 20D - but nothing else works. All fields are blank. I can change the directory where config is stored - but thats it (and can you add a function to create a new directory here please).

Info from the debugger below:

Thanks Alan. I found and fixed that connection bug. I also changed the way installation is done. You shouldn't get that annoying uninstall problem anymore. The download link has been updated.

Thanks.

You've still got a long way to go:

1. Can you put version numbers on the MSI please

2. I got the option to "repair" or "remove". No, I want to update... So, I clicked on remove and then installed it again (just in case).

3. I still cannot do anything. I connect the camera, start up your program and it sees it. But all fields are blank. So, I click on 'Connect'. Still nothing. Here is the full debug window info:

Hey Alan,

"2. I got the option to "repair" or "remove". No, I want to update... So, I clicked on remove and then installed it again (just in case)."
- The only time you see that screen is when the installer detects you already have that version installed and it's asking you to repair it or remove it. While it was rather premature of me to use the same installer names, the reason you're getting this is because you didn't install off the latest installer made available. I'll be renaming the installer files to make it easier for everyone to identify and overwrite their existing versions they downloaded beforehand.

The last version I released should work. When it says "Detected a CD Camera", it means it's connecting to a Powershot series camera. I fixed that and tripled checked it to make sure. You should instead be seeing "Detected an RC Camera", which means you are connecting to an EOS DSLR. It seems like you're still using the old version. Because of that, I'm forcibly renaming the installer files to make sure no one runs into that problem again (probably due to web browser caching).

Getting better. This time, it found it - although the debug window went crazy for about 3 seconds. I was able to change the Tv from 1/100 to 1/160th - it didn't actually change until I clicked on 'Capture'. Picture took (at least I heard the shutter) then nothing.

So, I clicked on 'Effect' (I don't know why). But at that point, I got the hour glass for a while. Debug window then said:

Date: 19/1/2005
Time: 19:38:8
--- TakePicture::RCRelease ---
Property Parsing Component ID
Picture Collection Component ID
CDSDK Component ID
Internal Error

I tried to take another picture (hour glass gone) but got a debug message as follows:

Taking Picture

Date: 19/1/2005
Time: 19:41:49
--- TakePicture::RCRelease ---
Property Parsing Component ID
Picture Collection Component ID
CDSDK Component ID
Unimplemented
Device Not Found
Device Busy

I clicked on disconnect and connect again. Then took a picture. Hour glass time.

You really need a 20D to play with. There are too many bits missing or not done yet for this remote debugging to work. I have the whole debug output in a text file - email me and I'll send them to you ([email protected]). But there are memory allocation errors, file i/o errors, directory not found errors etc.

Actually, most of those errors are expected. Not all features are supported on all cameras or certain settings, so the report the debugger creates is just saying "feature unavailable" in a nutshell. It has nothing to do with actual file and memory errors, in case you're concerned.

It is indeed difficult to conduct testing over the net. I was hoping the functionality would be seamless since the EOS SDK is identical to the Powershot SDK. I'll have to look into renting cameras, if such a thing exists.

Nevertheless, thank you for your support.

Yes, Vistek in Toronto will rent/lease equipment. There is probably some place similar in Ottawa.
