My 2 month-old Digital Rebel (still under warranty) has a bent hotshoe railing resulting from a drop. "Unbending" didn't work, so I need to replace it. I did a lot of searching, and have finally come to the point where I have two options:

(i) Send to Canon and get it repaired. How much does this kind of thing usually cost? From what I've seen, I would guess $150-$200?

(ii) I found the part number I need (CB1-3390). Canon says it will ship it to me for around $15. Does anyone have any pointers as to how to go about replacing it? This is my first SLR and it is not immediately obvious how the hotshoe is held in place, and how to remove it.

Lastly, any camera repair shops that you can recommend in the Bay Area?

Thanks for all your help.

You really don't want to know what is under the hot shoe... and Canon can ship the part but you lose the warranty... which I think that you already lost...
Try to get the part fixed by a mechanic... I think it can be done.
