I am pleased for the most part with the lenses I currently have:

Canon 18-55mm kit lens

Canon 50mm F1.8

Canon 28-135mm F3.5-5.6

What I am missing is the reach I used to have with my P/S Pro 90IS. The 135mm is pretty good, but I would like more reach. In fact, even though it is a sin, I would rather have the reach with less quality sometimes. I was O.K. with the quality of the lens on my old Pro-90. So my question is:

What is the best quality lens out there (Canon/Sigma/Tamron) that will give me around 200-300mm reach for the least cost? I really don't want to spend too much at this point. I just want good reach with minimal light loss. I keep reading posts about how bad lenses such as the Canon 100-300 are. I can't help but think that even if it is bad in many opinions, it may be as good as the lens I used to have on my Pro 90.

I also keep thinking that I would possibly get better results from the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and cropping to gain more zoom.

Any thoughts?

Actually the Sigma 100-300 F4 is very good if you can find it. Costs a fair chunk more than the Canon & Sigma 100-300 f4-f5.6 versions

http://www.photozone.de/2Equipment/easytxt.htm#Ztelelgets top marks in the 300mm zoom group.

The Canon 70-300/100-300 are not bad, they are just not anywhere near as good as the professional level L series lenses everyone talks about and compares them to:-)
