Hi, I have a Canon EOS Digital Rebel.

I want to do some portrait and was looking for a 50mm f1.8 lense since this seem to be the standard. But, could it be that a 50mm on this type of camera become something like a 80mm because of the 1.6 ratio? I would then have to found a 35mm lense to get the equivalent of a 50mm? (35mm x 1.6 = 56mm...)

Yes - for a "standard" lens on a 1.6 crop you could try one of the following 2 good and reasonably fast lenses:

EF 28mm f2.8 (*1.6 = 45mm)

EF 35mm f2.0 (*1.6 = 55mm)

Both are very reasonably priced. I would favour the 35mm as a nice documentary lens.

Do note however the 50mm f1.8 is a very nice portrait lens - (50 * 1.6 = 80mm) is a very nice focal length for portraits.

Yes, I agree for portraits something in the80mm-100mm range tends to work out well. Sowith the dRebels 1.6 crop that 50mm f1.8 looks very good, (and inexpensive):-)

I agree about the using a 50mm... I like the results i get! :G

Someone asked the same question only they are using a 20D which has the same 1.6 crop factor...
