Hi, all! I bought a 20D kit with the 17-88mm lens recently. I want to do headshots with more background blur so I've been debating between the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8. I've read so many good things about both and it seems to be a 50/50 split in the feedback I've gotten.

I really want to order today so I can try it out on someone next week. Any last words/advice? 50mm seems more flexible (if I want to throw in some 3/4 or full body shots) but for close shots I may have to get too close. At the same time, the 85mm has a minimum focus of 2.8 feet, although I think that will be close enough.

One more thing --would any of you advise selling my 17-85mm to get both primes I mentioned above? If you have the 17-85mm, are you happy with it? How does it compare to other lenses you own?

Thanks in advance for your help/advice!

Just remember that the 50mm becomes 80mm with the 1.6 crop factor. IMHO that would be a very good portrait lens. I have the f 1.4 version and so far very pleased with it but haven't tried it on portraits but it is fantastic in low light situations.
