After reading a thread on fredmiranda about a similar problem, I tried again with the alkalines.

It seems like it was just a poor connection with the AA adaptor. It's working 100% on the AAs now. For how long, who knows, but I wasn't even getting one shot before.

It doesn't change the cameras abilities, it does add a second vertical shutter button and controls. If you are comfortable with the camera body as is, just carrying a spare battery can accomplish the same thing. :-) I find the larger body/grip combination easier to handle.

I think the 20D with BGE-2 battery pack looks great, more like the 1D, very pro like, sure to impress.
