I was just reading the review of the camera on this website (Steve's) and on the conclusion page it says to download the firmware update and it gives a webpage. What happens if I don't do the update? Is it that important? And if I buy the camera tomorrow, what firmware will be on it, is Canon still making the camera with the original "program" or are they producing the newer cameras with the firmware update?

Newer firmware for current cameras is always being produced, if you need it or not depends on what the firmware adds or fixes.

Examples,
For the 20D going from firmware 1.0.4 to 1.0.5 or 1.1.0 (identical except for the firmware loader) was minimal it added 3 new menu languages and fixed a odd banding problem with the internal flash when doing high speed sync. Not an important update

For the 1d mkII series the latest firmware fixes a AF trackingissue and color balance issue, I'd say a probably important update.

Cameras that are being produced get shipped with the most current firmware that was available when they were made, so if you buy one now it should come with the latest already installed. You can easily check in the store, just power the camera on, push menu button and go to the last page. On the 20D at least, the firmware version is the last entry on the last menu page.

Canon has a specific download site for each country. I must say the UK link was not the easiest to find. Here is the link trail I followed:

http://www.canon.com -- Select Europe
--> http://www.canon.com/gateway/region/europe.html--- Select UK
----> http://www.canon.co.uk/ -- Select Support
------> http://www.canon.co.uk/Support/index.asp -- select technical support, select digital still cameras
--------> https://self-service.canon-europe.com/uk/pages/ -- search for "installation problems", select where can I find latest firmware
----------> http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/BeBit-e.html --- select firmware link to 20D
------------> http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/eos20...irmware-e.html

The UK site is pointing to the Japan site to get the firmware. :-)

No problem :-), I initially figured it would be a straight forward link like US or Canada. Relatively easy to find. But for some reason it seemsthe UKbranchreally went to a lot of trouble to hide it. :blah:
