I recently purchased the Canon 20D in a kit with the Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS USM lens. I really like the range that this lens provides and makes a great travel lens.

However, I noticed that for indoor shots using the built-in flash, the pics are not very bright / sharp. Would it make sense to keep this lens for a general travel / walk-around lens and get the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC lens as an "indoor lens" since I cannot afford the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8L USM lens or would the Canon EF 17-40mm F4.0L USM lens be a better choice?

how far away were your subjects? realize that the effective range of your built in flash is only around 12-13 feet..

Are you opposed to buying an external flash? There are certain instances where flash isn't allowed, but I much prefer to use an external flash over buying a 'faster' lense that in poor lighting may STILL produce poor shots. For around $200 you could get a Sigma 500 DG Super or Canon 420ex (if you like to stick with Canon). Then your 17-85 would be perfectly usable indoors. Just another way to 'skin the cat'

You might want to check the sigma 17-35 EX's as well, it's f/2.8 at the wide end, and its MTF measures quite good compare to both of the Canon's (ie cropped to 1.6):

either way, you are going to need an external flash.. i would make that my first purchase.. my vote is on the Sigma 500 DG Super vs the 420ex.. more features, wireless controller and slave.. good power.. can't go wrong..

then see what your needs are as for another lens.. you may find that you can save the money and pick up a nice 70-200 2.8 tele instead..
