Today I picked up the latest Australian digital camera magazine which puts out the latest prices of the latest camera available here

Canon 20D $1799.00 (1190 usa)

Rebel XT $1899 (1330 usa):!:

I cant believe that less than a year ago I paid $2000 aust for a 300D, I could have got the 20D had I waited.

I just find it strange that a 20D is cheaper than the new rebel here, what about elsewhere in the world???

This is 'Moore's Law' at work - I paid more for my Nikon CP-990 Point & Shoot than my dSLR not too long ago... :-)

That Canon 20D price is lower than I would pay for it new here. But the price of a camera is not the same everywhere. They charge what they think they can while still maximizing profit (i.e. number of units sold x price = gross profit. Increase price, decrease units sold but it still might increase gross profit... or it might decrease it. It's not an easy calculation.)

In the US, the prices for the different tiers of cameras seem to have leveled off. You get more (some times lots more) but entry level camera seems to be around $999 (maybe with a lens, maybe not) and the high end pro-sumer is around $1499 or so (usually without a lens, but maybe with one.) Maybe my memory is wrong, I'm sure someone can correct me on those prices. But that is what I remember from the 10D, 20D & D70 & DRebel.

I think that price is wrong. More like AUS$2,799. Don't worry, USA is always cheaper than Australia when it comes to equipment. I am downunder and constantly cringe at the net prices you guys get to what I have to pay here.

Cheers, Tim

Tim, check out "digital camera made easy" issue 26, that is the price quoted, I cant see the 20D being that cheap either. anyways, Im sticking with my 300D for now and concentrating on lenses.

I also paid around $1500 for the same setup. As of 2 weeks ago - the 20d was selling in the US for around $1300-1350 USD from reputable discounters. I don't see why prices would drop in the U.S.- at least not until Nikon comes out with a 20d competitor.

This past weekend, Dell.com made a boo-boo! They had a 25% off coupon discount on all their cameras including the Canon DSLR's and also applied to the Canon lenses. The 20D kit was going for $1175. This thing lasted thru the weekend. Early reports of those who purchased said that they've received shipping confirmation already.

Today, Dell.com has another sale. This time, only 15% off. Rebel XT body only can be had for about $765 including free shipping (plus tax if Dell charges tax where you live). See details here: http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/458238/

Here in South Africa the 20D + kit lens is selling for approx. $2700 (US) in the camera stores, and approx. $2400 from the local online stores.

The 350D + kit lens is selling online for approx. $1500 online locally.

The 300D has slipped off some local online sites.

And then of course one can buy a 1ds MkII for the bargain price of $11000 !!

Right now it is cheaper to get on a plane, fly to NYC, pick up a 20D from B&H, enjoy a day or two in the city, and fly home. In the case of the 1ds you'd have enough money over to fly back to Irvine, CA if you ever needed it serviced!
