Can anyone confirm - does the hotshoe on the DR XT (EOS 350D) support any external flashes, or do they have to be specific Canon ones? If it's the latter case, which ones are compatible?

There are 3rd party flashes that work on canon bodies. but you need to make sure that they are made for Canon bodies. (i.e. Sigma makes flashes that electronically need to be made compatable with Nikon or Sigma. They make both, so you have to confirm that the one you're getting is for Canon.)

As to which... well, most/all their product line actually.

if you are buying an older flash you might want to check this out before you buy to make sure everything will work correctly
