I just bought a 20D. Is there any way I can set it so that it starts numbering the file names at 7000 instead of 0001?

Yeap - rename the last picture on the CF card to IMG_6009

I think I didn't explain my question clearly enough.

The first picture I took with my new 20Dgot the file name IMG_0001.JPG. The file numberscontinue consecutivelywith IMG_0002.JPG and so on.

I would now like to "bump" the count up to IMG_7001. I want the camera to think that I have already taken 7000 pictures and it's now taking #7001. And I don't want that to reset after I erase the files on the CF card or do anything else.

(I already have files IMG_0001.JPG to IMG_6990.JPG takes with another camera. I want my 20D pictures to start with IMG_7001.JPG)

Exactly!

Rename the last picture on your CF card to IMG_6009 (or IMG_7000). When you use this CF card (with the last image named IMG_6009), the camera will count up from there...

It only reset the camera to 0 if you've set the camera to do so in the CF function!

Is the file numbering ststus (last number used) stored on the CF card or in the camera? I assumed the answer was "in the camera" but maybe I'm wrong about that.

If I switch to another CF card will the files on that card start again at IMG_0001?

Both!
The CF card has the higher priority - unless it's emptied

No - after the camera has registered the last IMG_xxxxx... it will remember this new value!

NHL is exactly right. I ran into this problem when using a friend's CF card from his 10D, it changed my file numbering to his. So I copied an image of mine to the CF card and the camera reset itself to my old file numbering.
