This is what i was thinking of a set up for macro shots using the 20D & sigma 150 macro. I figured i could use a 580ex mounted on the camera's flash shoe as a master. I would then use a bracket of some sort to mount the 2 420ex flashes, on to each side of lense or subject. Probably will need diffusers. So, other than the flashes can anyone tell me what i would need to do this? flash bracket (mounted on the tripod mount of the lense), any sync cords?? diffusers or bouncers?? etc., etc.. Is my idea a bit too much for macros?? would i have to really decrease power on the flashes so as not to overexpose or scorch the subject?? I am thinking of the mp24 maro lite but can't really afford that right now. any other suggestions?? thanx!!!

If you use the 580EX as a 'Master' why do you need the sync cords?

There's already a diffuser on the 580EX, so you only need this for the side 420EXs - With a 150 macro I believe there's enough room for the 420EX's body to be pointed at the 580 or reflection from the 'Master' beam to control the 'Slaves'

It'll work fine, the camera will modulate the higher ouputs correctly, all else you can always move the flashes back...

NHL, thanx!!! I was reading the 580ex manual last night and realized that they're all wireless flashes. so, it's the brackets i may need that are adjustable. i can't see spending $150+ for a wimberley. actually twice that for 2 of them. gee, maybe the 24mp flash may be cheaper in the long run.

I think so too, and this will work wirelessly with the 580EX as well:

Well, i was wondering if using the 580ex and 2 420ex flashes would give me the same effects as the canon mt-24ex macro flash. I already have the 580ex so costwise buying 2 420ex flashes and a bracket (or make my own brackets) would cost me about $400 ($330 for flashes after rebates and whatever brackets would cost). The mt-24ex is $about $630 ($599 for flashe after rebate and $30 for 72mm adapter). Also, i can still use my lensehood for more protection if i go the way of the 580ex and 420ex's. another thing is if i decide to do portraits, as in studio, i think the 3 flashes would be better than using the macroflash. I would assume the madroflash setup would be lighter and less cumbersome. anyone have any more suggestions? thanx!!
