I understand that the Digital Rebel will accept lenses from the older 35 mm EOS Rebel camera. Is there a disadvantage to using them on the digital version?

The lens, as long as its a Canon EF, will work on your Rebel with a focal length of 55mm or so once you take the 1.6x crop factor into account.

Whether having a 'normal' focal length lens is advantageous for you is something you will need to decide for yourself. But personally I would consider having an otherwise redundant wide aperture, 50mm fixed lens a good thing on a digital camera.

Happy shooting

Not sure what the "1.6x crop factor" refers to?
