The Canon should be better especially @ 24mm (Sigma is better @ 70mm though), and the MTF's show this as well; However I do have a comment on why the L 'seems' to have more contrast (and I observed this same phenomenon also with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS in fstopjojo tests) - Check the cropped pictures with the 1.4xTC toward the upper right corner where the lenses imperfections are magnified - I presumed the same TC is re-usedto testboth lenses:

The Sigma showed only blue fringes whereas the Canon also has a tint of red which has the tendency to darken the edges (i.e. 'more' contrast)when viewed normally - fstopjojo testswith the 70-200 f/2.8L IS also showed theses 'red' fringes when magnified
