i agree w/ the above the 24-70 2.8 is simply an excellent lens.. that is before you consider the price.. then it is in just a class by itself.. if you need a little more room on the wide end the sigma 18-50 2.8 is a good performer too..

that said the 17-85 IS and 28-135 IS from canon make nice walkabout lenses as well.. i have the 28-135 and use it quite a bit on my 20d.. it covers a very large and useable range of focal lengths and is quite sharp for a consumer lens.. the 17-85 is quite similar optically, if not better, and is a little wider, but at a 100$ premium..
