oK I got a canon digital rebel xt body and a sigma 18-125 dc on the way to me in the mail what I need know is a good flexable powerful flash unit. Ive kind of narrow it down to three canon 420ex ,Sigma EF-500 DG and the sunpack pz 5000 af zoom . Would the canon's 420ex easy of synch up with the rebel xt e-ttl metering outweight the fact that the sigma and sunpack are more powerful , have lcd readout on back, etc.... . Im interested in hear from anyone first hand knowledge flash units with the rebel xt. Im trying to keep the flash under $180.00 . Thanx for any contructive ideas or suggestions Bob S

The "Sigma 500 DG super" is fully ettl-II compatible just like the EZ 420.
It is also a lot easier to control than the Ez 420 (which requeires a few annoying steps to adjust output using FEC) and has the power and capabilities of the ez 550. Including the capability to control 4 remote wireless slaves.

I know nothing about the Sunpack. :blah:

The Sigma EF-500 DG Super has all the features of the Canon 580EX at the price of the canon 420EX. Can't go wrong with the sigma as long as it is the super.

I have the Sigma EF-500 DG Super for my Canon 20D. It works great...granted I'm still just a DSLR newbie. I paid $185 brand new including shipping from an ebay store. Am still learning all the features of the flash... :|

You asked for good, flexible, powerful and cheap (under $180). The DG and 420 are about the same price. The DG wins onthe other two points: more powerful and more flexible. The 420 does not have a manual mode and I don't believe it can act as a wireless master. Both are good :-)

bottom line.. sigma 500 dg super does everything that the 550ex does for the price of the 420ex. this includes wireless slave and master capabilities.. best of all, this wireless capabilities is fully compatible with the canon flashes/wireless transmitters..

i have one, and it is simply a great flash..

best regards, dustin

Kind of late to chime in...

But with the rear LCD and manual controls, the EF-500DG allows full control over the Flash Exposure Compensation (which is absent on the 420EX) - IMO this local feature to the flash is more valuable than the FEL found on the camera since this overide is independent from the ambient exposure if done on the camera body.

Another feature rarely discussed is the Sigma built-in photocell: This comes in quite handy whenone complements this flash to studio slaves - You just can't do this with any Canon without buying another adapter...

BTW with wireless flash -> you have to buy multiple units - i.e. the more you buy themore you save!!! :-) :G:lol:

Just to make sure - You want the EF-500 DG Super. Without the "Super" suffixthe DG only isa lesser flash even though it's still compatible... (but without the wireless and high-speed features)
