I have just purchased a Canon20D after using a 10D for 2 years. I am using my same CF cards in the new 20. I have chosen "continuous" file numbering method but was surprised to find the 20D did not start with 001, tracking the number of shots taken with this camera. I have reformated my CF card but no change with the numbers. I realize this method will prevent duplicate file names on my PC, but is there any way to track in the camera how many shots have been taken with the 20D independently from the 10D?

While the card is in the 20D, try resetting the file numbering to start over,in the menu. Or try formatting the card in Windows (if you have a card reader).

Thank you! Reformating the CF Card in Windows on my PC did the trick.
