I frequently depend on the grid in the finder of my film Nikons.

Can a grid be installed in the 20D which I am considering, or maybe the next generation of the 20D?

That feature is not likely to be found in a Canon prosumer body.
With Canon changable focusing screens are only found in the top-end EOS 1 series professional bodies.

Focusing screens are not user changeable in the 350D and 20D.
Unauthorized surgery needs to be performed on them, and these
third party mods instantly void any warranty from Canon.

I would not want to invest afairly large chunk of change on a new piece of hi-tech, and throw away and possibility of having the manufacturer cover the costs of repair it if it fails.
