I have just bought a 350D and got some limited lenses. I am hoping to do a lot of sport photos, and in some cases will need a fair size zoom....300-400mm.

I have not got an open -ended budget so lookingmore towards Sigma than Canon lenses, but if anyone can advise I would be very much appreciative.

There are lots of zooms by many makers in the x-300 range, not too many at 400

In the xx - => 400 range there is:
Sigma 80-400 OS <- Good
Sigma 50-500 <- Good
Canon 100-400 IS L <- Very good
Tamron 200-500 <- no experience

None of 400 or greater lenses are in the inexpensive range.

In the xx-300 range there are a lot more choices:
Sigma 100-300 <- expensive, but very sharp!
Sigma 70-300 APO <- OK relatively inexpensive
Canon 100-300 USM <- inexpensive, mine has ring USM
Canon 70-300 USM <- inexpensive, mine copy has can/stepper USM
Canon 70-300 DO IS USM <- expensive, but a good lens.
Tamron 70-300 <- no experience
Tamron 28-300 <- no experience

Hope this gets you started (or at least properly confused :blah

Peter.

What sort of sports photos?

Will they be indoors, at night?

Which sports?

For indoor sports in a small venue a 70-200 f2.8 isa great choice. If you always use a tripod you could go with either the Canon 70-200 f2.8 (non- IS)or the the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 . If you shoot hand-held I'd go with the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS.

As Terry mentioned, what sports are you shooting, and are the events held indoors or outdoors?

I shoot literally thousands of photos at the local motorcycle race events. I've been using a sigma 100-300 F4 and I'm still amazed at the quality of it. I've also recently purchased a 1.4 tele converter and am totally happy with the setup. Make sure you have a monopod to go with it thiugh. This lens is something else, especially for the money. I paid about $600 USD for a used one from evilBay. 11000 shots later, and still not a problem. Amazing. If you can afford it, then by all means go ahead.

I've heard some use the Canon 300mm f4L prime ($1120 at B&H) for motorsports (nice fast AF). Also, if you want to shoot at professional events there aresometimes restrictions on the length of lens you can bring. I believe FIA doesn't allow spectators to have >200mm.

Yes this lens by Sigma is a real gem. Extremly sharp, and not too badly priced:!:

Ya, that is where the 70-200 F2.8 and a 2x tc comes in :-)
