Bob, I have a 50mm already, my problem is is that I'm not close enough to use it. I'm usually shooting video as well and I don't like to stray too far from where the video camera is. Which is why a need a little 'reach' with this lens.
Ahhh ... so if the 50mm you already have doesn't have enough reach, then the Sigma 18-50 doesn't sound like it will do. Too bad, 'cause it sounds like a sweet lens. Guess you're back to looking at a 24-70 or a 28-75 ... or an 85mm f1.8.

So would something like the Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens suit my needs?

Someone pointed me in this direction when I was lense shopping for my 300d - hopefully it will come in useful for you too.

OK, I have narrowed my choices down to 2 lenses.

Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens

or

Sigma 24-135mm f/2.8-4.5 Aspherical IF

While I have heard a lot of good things about the Tamron lens I certainly like the additional reach of the Sigma. The review sites I have visited all rated the Tamron lens higher than the Sigma though, which makes my decision difficult.

(I'd still like to someday own a Canon 70-200 F/4L and a Canon 85mm. But for right now I don't think I can wait until I can budget the 70-200 (as I need a faster lens now) and the 85mm doesn't cover the areas I need.)

Any last thoughts about this subject?

I would also vote for the Sigma 18-50mm EX DC f2.8. I did a little amateurish sharpness comparison between my new Sigma and Tamron 28-75mm...I found the Sigma a little sharper...so I sold my Tamron. I needed a wider angle lens anyway.

The Sigma 24-135mm f/2.8-4.5 Aspherical IF is not one of the EX line.
It is a consumer level lens with construction is not so good as lenses in the EX series.

I'd stay with making the choice from one of the following:
Sigma 18-50 DC EX (Not Full Frame)
Sigma 24-70 EX (Full Frame)
Tamorn 28-75 xr di. (Full Frame)

All will work on your RebelXT, only the last two will work if you move to a new Full Frame camera like the 5d.

i have the XT and use the 28-70 ex dg macro almost exclusivly except for hiking because it kinda heavy!

it is a sharp lens and a great performer and its inexpensive to boot! Then for about the same $$$ or close to it, there is the canon 75-300 IS.. thats also a nice lens!

I ended up getting the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 and have used it once. Shot a couple of hundred pictures last night with it. If you are interested you can view them at http://mrcoons.smugmug.com/gallery/832651/1/37264679
