something wrong happens to my eos 20d or is it the digital limits?

Today i photographed a mariage,as i always did,for 10 years now,but instead using my eos elan film camera,i used my eos 20d that i bought a few months ago.

It didnt record any detail in the background of the inside of the church, although i had slaved a studio flash of 400 ws!

For years now,i had always plenty of detail in the background, and light.

Today i got so black background that i dissapointed, thinking of ,if its not my settings,it is the limit of the sensor!

any help?

If the camera/flash is using ETTL II then the flash will expose the subject and the camera light meter is used to determine the ambient or background exposure. I wouldn't think it would matter how much flash power is available, ETTL II will only use enough for the subject. Not sure if this is your particular problem though.

Hopefully one of the flash guru's will pipe in and give you some tips.
