I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I'm thinking while you're in "clean sensor" mode, you can remove the battery while the camera is on. I haven't tried this.
The mirror (as well as the shutter) need to be 'energized' to stay up (or open) - It will return to its 45 degree resting position when the power is removed. There were numerous writings on this subject when Canon switched from the F-series mechanical cameras to the electromagnetic A's series cameras...

On a dSLR the mirror(and shutter) is flipped back to its default(with shutter close) when the battery compartment is opened (try it!)

Ok, I guess back to Setiprime's comments that the camera should be off...how to expose the sensor while it's off for cleaning?

I also have 2 spots, and they were there right out of the box. I looked at the sensor in "clean mode" and I can see 2 small smudges or distortions. It is not dust.

Should I have it serviced?

Has anyone else had "smudges" out of the box?.

I am only in to the first month of my warranty.

Josh
