Anyone have any experience with the Rebel XT and the Sunpak 383 flash? I expect to very rarely use the external flash and hate to invest in the Canon because of costs. If I must go Canon, which one do I need? Thanks

The best valued flash out there is no doubt the Sigma 500 DG Super. It has most of the features of Canon's previous top flash the 550EX and also supports the newer ETTL II which the XT has. For $200, it can't be beat and it comes in Canon, Nikon, Konica Minolta, Pentax, and Sigma versions!

I would agree with the Sigma DG 500 Super. It cost the same as the Canon 420EX, maybe even a little less, and has all the features of the 550EX. Great build quality. The newer Canon 580EX has a little more whistles and bells, but at a $500 price tag. I think I paid $179 for my Sigma about a year ago.

The Sunpak is only $60, so for the occassional user it represents a great value.

I use the Sunpak 383 on my Canon 20D and I get predictable results.

Obviously the more expensive Canon flashes are going to work better.
