Hi Everyone. I have recently been very intriqued about IR photography and have been doing a lot of research. I have obviously found that I would have tobutcher my Canon 20D by removing the IR filter in order to accomplish this type of photography.

Therefore, my question is:

I am in the market for a second (everyday) digital point and shoot. Does anybody know what would be decent quality, have good IR response and be the least expensive to purchase? I would like to stick with Canon since I might be able to use the battery packs I already have and the compact flash cards. But if canon is using the same technology in all of their cameras, they most likely won't work. I don't mind going with a model that is older in order to get a better price and have the IR capability.

thanks in advance.

Jasper

It's not a point and shoot, but the obvious answer is the Canon 20Da, designed specifically for infrared.

Check out the original Minolta Dimage 7(which I still have)

It handles like an SLR, i.e. focus/zoom ring (and full-time AF manual overide), but have an EVF which is boosted-up in the dark and turn to B/W instead which is perfect for this kind of IR shots: http://www.pbase.com/zylen/infrared_with_dimage_7

I use the Sony DSC-F828 as the 20D is not suited for IR. Put it into nightshot mode, use a hoya R72 + an ND 4 and/or an ND 8 and get outstanding IR shots. Have also used an ND400 only, and am very pleased with the IR results.

Hey Jasper - I have a modified Canon G5 that I love. Here are a few recent shots from it:

Anyways, the guy who modded my G5 did a great job, and the whole thing, including camera and conversion, cost about $500. If you're interested, email me at chris(at)imagineimagery.com for his contact info.

Hope this helps!

I was hoping this thread would get some more responses. I am also curious as to what others are using for IR. Here's a few more from my Modified G5 this past weekend:

Ok, ok, I'll stop. Anyone have examples from other cameras? Thanks.
