Hi everybody,

I just receive a new canon 20D camera as a gift and it seems like everytime the camera has not been used for more than 8 hours or so, when i pick it up the next time, It will not turn turn on completely (The LCD on the top is on, I can focus the camera by pressing the shutter release half way. However it will not take a picture) The only way that the camera will work again is if i take the battery out and put it back in. After I do that the camera will work fine. Anybody have any idea why it's doing this?

Thanks in advance.

Maybe try recharging the battery for about 12 hours.

What you describe is clearly wrong.
I can't think of any reason this would happen... but personally I'd think it would happen after it went to sleep. It seems very odd to me that if you let it go into sleep mode (power-saving mode) and then after 10 minutes woke it up it would be fine, but if you let it sit for 8 hours (in sleep mode) it wouldn't wake up.

Try letting it go into sleep mode for just a little while and seeing if it comes out properly by a 1/2 press of the shutter.

This really sounds like a defective unit. Very sad, as you just got it.

It is a very nice camera, I'm sure you'll be very happy with it.

Ahh, I do believe I recall them suggesting fully charging (for a long time) the battery the first time. Maybe overnight? I'd check the manual.

Certainly won't hurt to do that.

From what I can recall of Lithium Ion they do tend to die pretty quickly if not given a full charge the first time. It sounds more like a bad battery to me than the camera, so try the full charge (I know they used to say 24 hours, not sure if that's still the case.) If it doesn't work after that definitly look for an exchange. It's a very nice piece of equipment that you'll enjoy for sure.

The manual says it takes 90 minutes to recharge the battery from dead flat.

The manual also suggests not to recharge the battery for more than 24 hours in a row as it could cause the battery to degrade.

When in doubt , "rtfm".

well, i bought a new battery, charged it until its full and let it keep on charging for another hour after its full and the camera was still doing the samething. I sent the camera back to the place where i get it from and they sent another one to replace it.

hopefully the new one will work just fine.

thanks for all the reply guys.

i will let you know how the new one do.
