Well, I'm afraid I haven't had the problems you have with the camera recognizing the flash. About the only thing close is turning both on or recovering both from 'sleep' and not giving the flash a second to charge before I fire away. So, if you're having a problem with the flash not being recognized then I believe you have a defective product.

It doesn't matter which you turn on first.

I also haven't encountered the battery issue before - of course I usually change batteries or re-charge after 300 shots or so.

As for FEC, you can set it on either the body or the flash. But realize if you set +1/3 on the flash and -1/3 on the body you'll cancel each other out. I recommend selecting one method - either always use the body or always use the flash to set FEC (I set it on the flash since I got the flash when I had the 300D and the 300d doesn't have FEC so I got used to setting it on the flash and continue to do that on the 20d).

I agree, the manual is horrible. It doesn't do a good job at all of explaining why you might want to do certain things. I agree it assumes you know all the terminology and really just describes how to access the functions.

... and I agree!

Actually I never turn anything off (both flash and camera have auto-off); However when I mount the 500DG Super (or 550EX) on the camera, pressing the shutter release 1/2 way on the camera always turn on the flash...

It also remembers if it was set for Master or Slave E-TTL modes when it wakes up from the sleep mode

This is one thing I don't understand. If you purchased a brand new Mercedes E55 AMG, would you get Enki's or the custom made Mercedes rims designed for the AMG?

Anyway, I have the 580EX and several 420EX flashes used as slaves. I currently shoot with a Digital Rebal and a 7NE film camera. I purchased the 580EX ahead of time because I new I would eventually get the 20D with supports the new E-ttl V2.

From my experience the 580EX is worth every cents. I purchased this over the Sigma for the external power battery pack which I swear is a life saver. Without it I was loosing so many shoots at wedings and fashion shows due to slow recycle times. Add a couple of slaves reduces this drain even more. With 20D speed a Sigma without external battery pack will definately NOT keep up for more than 4-5 consecutive shots.

Is this even really a choice the 20D and 580EX are a perfect hands down match.

PS

The picture to the left was shot on my drebel with 580ex in manual mode. The room behind this statue was well lit and people were walking around. I didn't want them inpicture so this is what I did. I set camera to smallaperture F8+, shutter 200 to reduce ambiant light, ISO 100 and flash to low power so it would fall off at about 2-3 feet. Perfectly soft lighting.
