After a good amount of reading and research I have narrowed it down to Canon 30D. That will be my early Christmas present in April...:-)

I have posted my lens questions in the lens forum but here I can use your recommendations for these other accessaries.

What I gathered so far is that I would need these things to go with the camera:

One 2 Gig card, Canon Flash 580EX, A flash diffuser lens and lens cleaning kit.

Canon flash is too expensive. Is there a cheaper but good replacement? What is a flash difuser lens? What kind of card is good? Is there anything else I would need to get started? What about photo software? Would I need a flash bracket for avoid red eye..:?

For information on flash cards go here:

A flash diffuser decreases the effective range of the flash. Sort of spreads it out more so that the effect is not as harsh in certain situations.

I too decided on a 30D. Already have a list of things I'll order with the camera, like you do.

You might want to consider 2 x 1 GB cards instead of a single 2 GB, in case one of them goes bad on you.

580EX is too much of a flash for me, I'll make do with a 430EX. Besides I am hoping to shoot without a flash most of the time. Do intend to use it for weddings etc. hence you need the top grade flash?

Mine is on its way.

Someone said that its good to have smaller cards because if one breaks, you dont lose everything. Someone else said the most common cause of card failure comes from handling them, so perhaps a larger card may work if you dont have to be changing it all the time? Perhaps one of those portable photo storage thingies is the answer?

Minimum kit:

Two CF cards, minimum 1GB each.

Spare battery (Sterlingtek.com has cheaper but better versions than Canon).

Rocket blower to clean sensor.

Lens.

Carrying bag.

Desirable:

New strap (try Optech Pro Loop)

Flash (try the Sigma EF-500 Super for $200 at Sigma4less.com)

Photoshop CS2, or at minimum, Photoshop Elements, or your favorite post processing software.

Compact flash card reader for your PC.

Excuse my ignorance but why do you want a card reader rather than using usb?

Sig 4 less, def.

Quality or quantity? Still out on this one....
