NHL,

Thanks for the info! After reading the thread you linked, I decided not to go with the Sigma 17-35EX. Apparently it has too many quality control problems. I don't feel like trading lenses until I get one that works well. I have my eye on the Canon 20-35 USM. Unfortunately a polarizer filter still costs $80 for that lens.

Barthold,
It was the Sigma 15 to 30 that I tried and returned.
Still waiting for Canon to deliver 17-40 to the Store here.
Will post opinions when it arrives.

BTW, I actually liked the 15-30mm except for flare up to about 25mm and inability to use polariser, which I consider essential for landscape shots.
BTW:It's warmish colour did not bother me.

Finally got the Canon 17-40 f4L.
So far I think it is superb.
Ability to use polariser or UV filter for protection, smaller size, quiet USM and image quality all plus over 15-30 Sigma.

Am happy with 17-40 f4L plus 50 f1.8 plus 70-200 f4L to cover most situations.

Confused?
I just got the Sigms 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 DG and I was able to put a Hoya UV filter on the front .The lens is new and it came with a ring that slips on the front of the lens and the front of this ring is threded for filters.
mabee its something new sigma is providing with their lenses????
any way I love my 15-30.
