It's not an update, is a special version for digiscoping afaik. They did someting special to it to make it specially good for that type of photograpy. What the difference is i'm not for shure.

it means taking photos of the stars (night skies, etc).

the "a" stands for "astronomy" if I understand well...

So it's not a normal use camera!

This is the astronomy version specially design for low light photography and use on telescope mounts. I'm not sure what's different but Can has decided to stop making these. Canon used to have a special link on their SLR site for astro photography. There was some information on how to purchase the the 20Da there.

The 20Da was modified for astrophotography by:
  • Replacing the anti-alasing filter wtih one that passes some more light in the red/infrared range.[/*]
  • Adding a special mono-only mode where the mirror and shutter flip out of the way and allow a monochromatic LCD preview mode to assist in focusing the telesocpes.
    [/*]
The special LCD focusing mode I suspect is just firmware hack, and the replaced Canon AA filter was not enough to match the ones in mods made for real astrophotography.

The way Canon tried to made it, it could do both normal and astrophotography but neither very well.
And the 20Da cost about double the normal 20D to boot.
It was a good idea but had a very limited market.
