I have owned a Kodak DX6490 with a 10X for a couple of years now and absolutely love the camera. I do have trouble taking sports photos in a gymnasium because of lighting conditions and would also love to be able to take closer shots of football games. I am considering upgrading to a Canon Rebel XT but the more I research the more confused I get. It appears that the zoom telephoto lens that go with the Rebel (i.e. 55-200) will not zoom in any farther than my 10X camera. Is that the case? Will the Rebel also help with the low light pictures or should I just stick with what I have?

Your DX6490 has an equivalent of 38-380mm range so yes the 55-200mm kit lens won't have the same reach

A 70-300 should have more reach than your Kodak... (after the 1.6x crop factor of the XT)
-> You're just loosing some coverage at the wide angle that's all

Or if you're in a budget, choose the Sigma 18-200mm lens with the XT which would be 28.8-320mm after the 1.6 crop factor.

The aperture could be an issue (f/2.8-3.7 on the DX6490 is slightly faster), but if you can get by with your Kodak then the XT should do fine with the higher ISO capability in the same lighting condition...

-> You might need to spend a little extra on some faster f/2.8 lens otherwise
