RAW pictures show more noise than JPEG. They are also sharper and with more detail.

My 30D has about the same amount of noise. You can see it at 400 even at 200. But only in darker areas. I do not use neat image or ninja.

Dennis, i currently use Photoshop 7.0, Irfanview, or Picasa2, depending on whati want to do, and NeatImage for noise reduction.

i'll try some RAW shots and see if i can tell a difference in the prints, which is the only place that matters to me. if it doesn't make a visible difference on paper at 8x10 or 11x14/12x18, then it's not worth the memory penalty...

Another 'noise' sample, 30D @ 1600ISO:

Detail, 1:1 crop; I would say not bad at all (regarding to noise only):

I think my old 10D gave less noise at ISO1600. I need to run some side by side tests. Here is one of the web sized shots at ISO1600 from 10D. Don't have 100% crop at hand right now.

that wouldn't surprise me... the 10D has 25% fewer pixels on the same sensor, so it's bound to be a little cleaner...

It is hard to compare pictures like this. You need two cameras side-by-side. One thing I am sure, my 30D is better than A80 :-)... and that was my 'upgrade'. jst kdn

But according to canon 20D/350D/30D have less noise at higher ISOs than 10D even when having more pixels.

I will do the test and post some results, hopefully over this weekend.

it'll be interesting to see. i've always considered the 10D as a sort of benchmark for low noise...

Hi I am new to this forum and will be absorbing the info here like a sponge . My first Question is about noise so here goes . I have a Cannon d20 and i do quite a few indoor shots of dancing(ceroc) usually under fluro type lights and was wondering what settings you gurus use ? I tried iso 400 thru to 1600 quite grainy??? also I had my camera set on manual and could not get it to stay on 3.5 for AV kept jumping to 4.5 or 5.6 rendering the photos very dark even with flash .Shutter speed was 1/125
Thanks for advice
Brett
will post shots later:|
