~I have seen my need for an external flash for the 20D. I would like to get one this summer so I have it for college. The main deciding point is the price. Can I get away with the 430ex, eventhough it can only be used as a slave, or is it worth getting the 580ex, for the power and its use as a main flash?~

another option is the Sigma EF-500 DG Super. Almost the same features as the 580 for quite a bit less money. I have one that I use with my 20D with great results.

B&H has the Sigma for $229.95, but they don't list the price for the 580EX.

Yes they do. I know because I just bought the same flash yesterday from BHPhoto.

It's 379.99 before shipping and or the Canon 25 dollar rebate (mail in).

Do a search for it through google if you have to.

I'm with Caboose on this - There's not much difference in price between the 430EX and 580EX (about $80)

Either go all the way for the 580EX or a Sigma EF-500 DG Super for the $ saving...
-> The Sigma is both a Master or Slave and can also sync optically to studio flashes (which the Canon can't), and is more powerful than the 430EX...

The 550EX is replaced by the 580EX (and the 420 by the 430)

Put me down for the Sigma also. I love the built in diffuser that swings down when you need it. Paid $179.00 at local Camera store.

I had a couple of the Sigma EF-500 DG Supers with my 20D...no complaints...Igot a great deal via ebay on a couple of 580EX's that I couldn't pass up...it was only a $50 upgrade for each flash, so I said, "OK!"

If you're buying from B&H, do a search for "PSMAY"...it's their special discount code. The 580EX price is $359.95.

Here's the link specifically: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...ughType=search

For other "PSMAY" stuff: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...amp;image.y=12
