Default composition 1/3rds "rule" and 10D focus points

Is there a reason that Canon would go to the trouble of setting up such a great 7 point focus system, but place the points away from the primary focus points used by many photographers?

ie Why not put them at the 4 points of rule of 1/3rds plus left center and right at 1/2 frame height?
Does any camera do this?

Otherwise what a superb camera.

BRAVO!! I couldn't agree more. Plus, all the focus problems that I have had and wrote about have me now only using the center focus point, pre focusing, then re-composing for my final exposure.

You would think that such a universal compositional technique of the rule of thirds may influence viewfinder grids or focus design, but I think they may be only concerned with the majority who may be in to centering.

Still - I love the camera AND the price. I've been waiting a long time for a digital that would satisfy my quality and price expectations. Can't wait to see what's out in five years.
