After a lot of reading, I think I'm leaning towards:

Sigma Zoom Telephoto 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO

As I understand, when I'm not zooming out, the apeture will be f4 vs. 5.6 (not great for low light action).

For the price, it seems good, no?

The Sigma 70-300 is a great performer by all accounts. It's a great starter for good light action shots outside. Indoors it won't be of much use for action but for $230 you get a LOT of bang for the buck.

Why is there no mention of sigma 135-400mm lens in this discussion?

It's just an OK middle average lens whereas the 100-300 f/4 EX is outstanding HSM lens with really no peers. The Sigma 70-300 DG APO on the other hand is probably the cheapest quality telephoto zoom... for starter
