You're not looking at the pictures carefully...
Check again the Depht Of Field (DOF) on the ruler - It's not centered (the area around the 11 markings). The adjustmennt center it!

-> The reason you may not see this with your lens(es) is that they are both f/5.6 which means the high-precision AF sensor on the camera is not used. The high-precision AF sensor is only enabled at f/2.8 or larger. Try to shoot a ruler up close @ 45 degree and post the results

OK, but it is still hard to adjust so I will think a lot before I take the chance....
