OK. I'm going to get either the Sigma 17-70 or Canon 17-85 IS for my Rebel. While the Canon costs more, it also offers more -- more zoom and IS. But technical reviews have been a bit better for the Sigma, which is also almost macro.

so .... which??????? thanks

Depends on what's most important to you. I decided IS wasn't important to me on the wide end. I've been very happy with the 17-70, knowing that I got a technically superior lens for less money. My Dad, faced with the same decision, went with the 17-85. He does a lot of traveling and wanted IS for indoor shots (churches, museums, etc.). Both are good lenses. Figure out what's important to you.

FWIW...I have had my Sigma 17-70 for about 3 weeks and have been very pleased with it, sharp, fairly quick to focus and pretty good macro shooting.

I bought mine at Sigma4less, I'm ordering another for my wife.

I would be getting my rebel xt and I was also considering to buy one of these 2 lenses. My inclination is towards 17-70 as the reviews for it are better. However when I compared its review with nikor 18-70, it seems that nikor one is even better, especially in resolution. I am reading the lens reviews from http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html.

So is there any lens for rebel xt in the 17-80mm range that can match the performance and price of nikor 18-70.

You have to remember that the Nikkor tests are done with the D200, so in general most comparable lenses will have a better resolution because of the D200 higher 10Mp resolution over the Canon's MTF's with the 350 which is only 8Mp!
(... and I agree the MTFs with the Nikkor/D200 are akways better in general over Canon)

-> The Sigma 18-125 is quite nice for an all around lens: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/len...3556/index.htm

I have had the Sigma 17-17 Macro for a couple of months now and am very happy. I have a 70-200mm 2.8 Canon L lens I use most of the time so I have a"top of the line"lens to comapre it to. I have been very pleased with the results.

Here are a few examples:

They were all taken in the "Dine with Shamu" area at SeaWorld Florida about 4:30 in the afternoon. For the $ I am very satisfied with the lens.

Good luck!
