The 100-400 is generally considered to have quality problems. The one that I have is clearly sharper zoomed back just a touch from 400mm. I know others that have the same problem. Too many of them are fairly soft all over (i.e. should never have been shipped)

But it is still a great lens, and I like it a lot. Be happy you got a good one.

ps. I want to add that I can easily sharpen my pictures from it so that the quality is very good. I'm not complaining about the end result (after editing) I'm thinking of the out-of-camera picture, which is clearly a touch sharper if I back out the zoom a bit.

This lens has been my work horse for over a year now and I think it is really
good. Originally I used it with my Drebel, and now with my 20D I am
really pleased with it. At f/7.1 to f/11 @ 400 mm, my usual conversion sharpenning
is 0.5 radius, 75-100% and depending on subject, followed by a 0.2 radius,
in the same range. And quite often, with really good light, I find I only need
the 0.2 step to get the really fine detail. At f/5.6, the numbers are bumped
up by about 50%. From this, it would appear to me that most of the
sharpenning is to overcome the AA filter in the 20D.
So overall, I think I have a pretty good copy.
