What sort of sports and wildlife are you looking at shooting?

I would also very strongly suggest adding the Sigma 100-300mm f4 lens into the mix as it is a fantastic lens and I think in the US will come very close to the price you are looking at.

Both good lenses so you can't err either way...

The question is like Mark1616 alluded to is what will you intend to shoot in wildlife and sports?
-> 300mm is too short for small wildlife and f/4 is not bright enough for most indoors or night sports...
A wiser choice would be some 70-200 f/2.8 which are still under $1000, but with a 2x adapter you can still get to 400 f/5.6, which is a minimum for wildlife.
IMO the recommended Sigma 100-300mm f/4 is probably the best out of any 100-300 selection - Still fast @ 300mm, but when combined with a 1.4x converter (@ 400mm) it'll put some L zoom with equivalent focal lenght to shame...
