Hi, I am looking to buy a used 300mm that I will use very limitted, so wanted something inexpensive. Looking around I can buy used Canon 75-300 III for $100, the Sigma 70-300mm dg (non apo) is running around $70.
Is one better than the other, are they basically the same performance and quality? Thanks |

The Sigma 70-300 apo is a better lens then the canon 75-300mm. An it is worth getting the apo. The problem when I tried out the 75-300 a couple years back with the large amount of distortion when zoomed out. After testing it, I passed on the 75-300.

Thanks, I was only going to use it for some distance vacation shots, and also have a outdoor graduation that I might need the distance. I have a canon 28-135mm IS that I try to use most of the time. It is just not long enough sometimes, but I am running out of money(or patience from my wife$$)

Personally I wouldn't get either, out of the budget lenses the Tamron 70-300 is the best of the bunch so would seriously consider that. If you can't find one 2nd hand then new they are $160 and you will be happier with the quality. It still isn't a great lens but it is the one I would go for.
If you must for some reason go for one of those 2 options then I would struggle to choose as the non apo Sigma is quite weak and so is the Canon........ hmmm, I think that would be almost a coin toss decision.

How much range do you need, if you want a very sharp lens. The ef-s 55-250 is a really good lens and does macro also, and you get IS. Which I find helpful on the long end shots.
Another non IS option is the tamron 70-300 DI LD. Here is a link to the model you want.link http://www.adorama.com/TM70300DEOS.html

i 2nd the notion of getting the tamron within the budget teles, or if you don't need that range, the canon 55-250 is a sharp lens with IS
