How does the 55-250mm f/4-5.6 compare to the 70-300mm f/4-5.6? About how much range would I lose by getting the 250, would I still be able to take macro shots?

The 55-250 is slower to focus than the 70-300 IS USM, so it's not very good for sports/action/wildlife. The 55-250 also has more vignetting wide open at any focal length. The difference between the angle of view at 250mm and 300mm is about 20%.

The 55-250 has a minimum focus distance of 1.1 m or 3.66 ft with a scale
of 1:3 The 70-300 has a minimum focus distance of 1.5 m or 5 ft with a scale of 1:3.8 So for macro shots, the 55-250 is the better option (IMO)... if you want you can take a look at some of my spring shots, all taken with the 55-250!

with the 70-300, it become a very fun lens with the extension tube. But the canon EF 25 II is compatible with ef-s lenses. So with the ef 25 II I think the 55-250 would be a heck of a fun lens also.
